US Navy Awards MicroStrain a Phase I SBIR Contract

Williston, VT – The US Navy (NAVAIR) recently awarded MicroStrain, Inc. a Phase I SBIR contract worth $80,000 to develop a wireless system to measure buffet loads on the control surfaces of in-service aircraft. The data obtained will be used for structural life tracking of individual aircraft.

Structural monitoring of Navy aircraft is of critical importance as the fleet ages. The highly transient nature of buffet loading on control surfaces makes it difficult to measure using conventional sensors.

“We will solve this problem by combining a network of time-synchronized wireless sensors with integrated microelectronics for static and dynamic loads sensing, data recording, communications, and energy harvesting. Our proposed sensors possess major advantages, including: sealed stainless steel packaging, full calibration prior to installation, rapid installation, and locations which enable a full computation of control surface forces and moments”, said Steve Arms, President of MicroStrain.

Liquid Level Sensor Options
The liquid level sensing can be obtained using magnetic floats and switches, or the conductivity method. The conductivity method uses the simple concept of the conductive property of liquids to complete a circuit and cause an external control relay to actuate.

Temperature Sensor Options
Thermocouples, RTD’s, thermistors and thermostat switches with an assortment of accuracies can be incorporated into the assembly.

Tempco Electric Heater Corporation designs and manufactures electric heating elements,
temperature sensors, temperature controllers and turnkey process heating systems.

To track the quantity of parts available on a rack to ensure a push-through manufacturing process, one option is to mount two detection sensors either alongside or above the rack which can detect parts at two different levels, or for smaller parts you can check stocking level with a distance measuring sensor.

Here’s why:

It starts with a heavy SS diaphragm able to withstand pulsating pressure;

It’s paired with a high-sensitivity CVD sensor; laser welded for zero distortion;

A custom ASIC chip provides exceptional linearity correction and superior thermal compensation.

The combination of these components leverages the strength of sensing element. The resulting pressure sensor with a unique balance of performance and value, with exceptional proof and stability specifications.

Series 4050 Photoelectric sensors with highly effective background suppression

May 13, 2009 by admin
Filed under Photoelectric

New Contrinex Series 4050 photoelectric sensors with considerably improved background suppression are built into a 40 x 50 x 15 mm housing and excel by their long operating distance of 500 mm, with a setting range from 20 to 500 mm.

contrinex-sens

The operating distance is independent of the target color, shape or surface structure, and is set by means of a 3-turn potentiometer with position indication. The devices feature a switching frequency of 500 Hz and work with red light, which considerably simplifies their alignment.

Their outstanding optical characteristics result in a quasi-linear output function with a virtually negligible blind zone (< 1 mm at s = 300 mm).

The sensors are enclosed in a glass-fiber-reinforced PBTP housing, complying with insulation class II. They are equipped with a glass window and a connector that may be adjusted from 0 to 90°. In addition to conventional mounting methods such as mounting brackets, dovetail fastening provides an alternative option.

CONTRINEX has manufactured inductive and photoelectric proximity switches since 1972. It specializes exclusively in the development, manufacture and sales of positioning sensors for industrial use. All departments and management levels in the company’s management system are ISO 9001:2000 certified.

Accuracy vs. Resolution

May 12, 2009 by admin
Filed under Pressure

Purpose: To describe the difference between “accuracy” and “resolution” for silicon based pressure sensors.

Application: Any application.

Discussion:
Silicon based pressure sensor inherently have infinite resolution.  The limit to the practical use of this limitless resolution is based upon many factors associated with the compensation and amplification of the output signal and the accuracy demanded by the application.

may-st-1

All the figures show an output signal where the output of the sensor is displayed as a signal quantized (stepped) by an analog to digital converter after some amplification of the pressure sensor signal.  For ease of display the steps are relative to each other and not representative of a typical system.  For instance a relatively low accuracy system would be an 8-bit system resulting in quantization of the signal into 256 steps (28).  As a practical matter for today’s sensors and added electronics the limit to the resolution with accuracy acceptable to most applications is roughly one part in sixty thousand, or a 16-bit system (216).  For such a system the analog to digital converter would be somewhere between 18-bits to 24-bits.
