The EK1132 Power over EtherCAT junction terminal enables EtherCAT® sensors to receive power over a standard Cat 5 cable. Ultra high speed EtherCAT sensors that deliver low microsecond (µs) level communication can now be more easily installed in industrial applications. Based on the IEEE standard 802.3af, the EK1132 requires only a standard EtherCAT/Ethernet cable for the fieldbus signal and the power supply.

The EK1132 EtherCAT junction suits shaft encoders or length measuring devices that can now be connected by a single cable. The sensor supply voltage of 48 V is generated in the EK1132 junction from the 24 V used as the industry standard. The maximum current input of the terminal devices is 350 mA. The signal and energy transfer takes place on the same wire so four-wire cables can be used. The sensors are connected to Power over EtherCAT via a 4-pin connector such as M12. The maximum possible Ethernet cable length is 100 m.

An intelligent power distribution system detects which power consumer belongs to which performance class and distributes the total available power (15.4 W) to the connected devices accordingly.

High Temperature Resistant Position Sensors

March 2, 2009 by

Pennsauken, NJ - Built for extraordinary reliability and resistance to high temperatures, Macro Sensors’ HSTAR 750 Series Hermetically Sealed Position Sensors offer a highly accurate and long life solution for the position measurement of steam control valves in power generation plants. Constructed of stainless steel, these ¾” (19 mm) diameter AC-operated position sensors operate in environments with high temperatures (400°F).

HSTAR sensor

Installed within the harsh environs of a steam plant, the HSTAR 750 Position Sensors can provide highly accurate position feedback of different control valves, providing output to remotely located electronics and/or control systems. For example, a typical two-stage steam turbine can contain a number of control valves – governor valve, throttle valve, interceptor valve, re-heat stop valve – all of which are operated by hydraulic actuators. Because the governor and throttle valves are modulating valves whose steam flow is of paramount importance to the efficiency of the turbine, it is especially critical to know their positions. It is also important to know if the interceptor and stop valves are either fully opened or closed. The HSTAR 750 Sensors can provide the necessary position output to signal an operator if something is not working properly. The cost to the plant operator of improper operation and inefficiency due to wrong valve settings can result in as much as several million dollars a year.

About the HSTAR 750 Position Sensor
Along with its resistance to high temperatures, the HSTAR 750 units feature high resolution, excellent repeatability and low hysteresis as well as the highest sensitivity consistent with good linearity. This means operators don’t need to change out units frequently and can rely on output to maintain optimum plant operations.

Electrical termination of the HSTAR 750 Series also is made through a sealed radial connector located near one end. The radial connector results in a through-bore design that permits access to either or both ends of the unit’s core for better mechanical support and core guidance, and easier cleanout in dusty or dirty locations. As the radial connector has a shorter installed length, the length of the HSTAR 750 Series sensors are at least 2” shorter than comparable units with an axially mounted connector for easier installation in tight spaces.

Available in ranges of ±0.050 inch (±1.25 mm) to ±10.0 inches (±250 mm), HSTAR 750 sensors are offered in several standard options including metric threaded cores, smaller diameters and low mass cores. For information visit: HSTAR Marcro Sensors.

METHUEN, MA - 3M Touch Systems announces the availability of the 3M MicroTouch System SCT7650EX, 3M’s next-generation, price-competitive surface capacitive touch solution for vandal-prone, heavy-use environments.

3m microtouch

Three key product features offer display integrators an economic, user-safe, easy to seal, robust touch solution for unattended public applications such as ATMs, kiosks, and vending machines. First, the 3M MicroTouch System SCT7650EX is now up to 40% less expensive than 3M’s current 3M MicroTouch ToughTouch II system. Second, the SCT7650EX touch system still features optically-clear laminated glass-on-glass construction which provides superior impact resistance and 86.5% light transmission for brighter, crisper display images. And finally, now the SCT7650EX touch system uses a conductive adhesive-bonded flexible circuit tail in place of the traditional solder connections and wire leads designed to facilitate a superior liquid and dust seal between the touch sensor and display bezel.
The 3M MicroTouch Sensor SCT7650’s laminated construction withstands the EN/UL 60950-1 impact resistance test and provides the necessary surface durability for most unattended, public-access environments. If surface breakage occurs due to extraordinary impact, the lamination helps isolate the glass shards between the touch surface and LCD to protect the user. In addition to providing high impact strength, the sensor construction can also include 3M Vikuiti Advanced Light Control Film (ALCF), which increases application security by restricting the display viewing angle and helping keep sensitive data private.
