Rising from obscurity in 2009, 3-axis microelectromechanical system (MEMS) gyroscopes (and gyro-based combo sensors) for consumer applications are expected to grow from a $458M market in 2011 to $1.57B by 2017, a cumulative annual growth rate (CAGR) of 22.8%. According to Yole Developpement’s report “3-Axis Consumer Gyroscopes,” smartphones and tablets are the major contributors to the developments in 3-axis consumer gyroscopes.
Consumer applications are not the only market segment benefiting from MEMS gyroscope technology. Yole’s report “MEMS : Gyroscopes and IMUs for Defense, Aerospace & Industrial” says the 2011 market for high-performance gyroscopes was estimated at $1.29B, growing at a 4.3% annual rate to reach $1.66B in 2017.
