FIR temperature sensor provides 50 ° FOV and I²C interface

November 19, 2025 By Redding Traiger Leave a Comment

Melexis has introduced the MLX90637, a surface-mount far-infrared (FIR) temperature sensor developed for thermal monitoring of key electric-vehicle (EV) powertrain components. Designed for applications such as inverter busbars, electric motors, and HVAC modules, the device provides non-contact temperature measurement in a compact SMD package compatible with automated PCB assembly processes.

The sensor offers intrinsic galvanic isolation, allowing it to monitor high-voltage components while maintaining electrical separation from low-voltage control electronics. Its FIR measurement approach eliminates the susceptibility to electromagnetic noise typically associated with wired thermistors and removes the need for manual installation steps required by NTC-based solutions. The MLX90637 is rated for operation across –40 °C to 125 °C, supporting long-term reliability in harsh automotive environments.

The device features a 50-degree field of view, 0.02 °C resolution, and a fast response time suited to real-time thermal management in high-power systems. These characteristics enable accurate detection of rapid temperature changes in assemblies where thermal limits must be closely controlled. The SMD construction enables production efficiencies and cost savings compared to TO-CAN sensors or manually installed NTCs.

System integration is simplified through a 3.3 V supply, factory calibration, and an I²C digital interface. The sensor includes an externally configurable I²C address and is housed in a 3 mm × 3 mm package, enabling placement close to heat-critical components in dense PCB layouts.

The MLX90637 is intended for automotive power electronics and thermal-control systems requiring precise, isolated, and fast non-contact temperature measurement.
