TDK Corporation has expanded its InvenSense SmartAutomotive™ MEMS sensor lineup with two new 6-axis IMUs: the IAM-20685HP and IAM-20689. These second-generation sensors are designed for automotive safety applications and have entered mass production, with samples currently available.
The IAM-20685HP achieves ASIL B certification on technical safety requirements and operates at temperatures up to 125°C. Its compact 4.5 x 4.5 x 1.1 mm³ QFN package makes it suitable for ADAS positioning and vision systems, particularly in modules requiring high computational power and stable IMU performance across temperature ranges.
The IAM-20689 variant features additional embedded diagnostics and meets ASIL D requirements. It is designed for critical automotive applications including electronic stability control, roll stability control, and drive-by-wire systems. Both models share the same core design, package dimensions, and register map, incorporating safety mechanisms for real-time sensor parameter monitoring.
Both devices integrate a 3-axis accelerometer and 3-axis gyroscope with 16-bit output resolution. They include two embedded temperature sensors and operate across a temperature range of -40°C to 125°C. The sensors feature user-selectable full-scale settings for both gyroscope and accelerometer functions, communicating via a 10 MHz SPI serial interface with CRC.
The sensors are manufactured using TDK’s proprietary MEMS fabrication technology and are qualified to AEC-Q100 grade 1 standards. They have been developed as Safety Elements out of Context (SEooC) and are available in QFN packages with wettable flanks for visual inspection during assembly.
These IMUs are compatible with various automotive applications, including automated parking, vision systems, vehicle dynamics systems, adaptive front-lighting systems, and active suspension systems. The embedded diagnostics eliminate the need for external software libraries to achieve functional safety requirements, simplifying system integration for automotive manufacturers.
