280 MPH Electric Car Employs Smart Position Sensors

Toroidion_1MW_Concept_10What does it take to create an electric vehicle that would be competitive at the Le Mans 24-hour race? Finland-based Toroidion Oy engineers are building an electric concept 1MW powered supercar that is expected to reach 280 mph. To achieve the performance they want, precise sensors are on their bill of materials. To get that precision, they chose Honeywell smart position sensors.

The SPS-L035-LATS linear sensor and SPS-R360D rotary sensor use a patented configuration of magneto resistive sensors to accurately and reliably determine the position of a magnet on a rotating or linearly moving object. By precisely calculating and verifying the absolute angle of rotation or the position by an ASIC in each sensor, the position of moving parts can be measured with precision of 0.01° or 0.04 mm. mag sensors2

The linear sensor has a 0 mm to 35 mm [0 in to 1.38 in] sensing range and the rotary sensor has a 360° sensing range. Both sensors are normally used in applications that require high precision such as heavy duty machinery.
