According to the recently released market research report, “CELLULAR MEMS & SENSOR CHIP MARKETS ’14” from Forward Concepts, MEMS and sensors now constitute 23.4% of the cellular handset and tablet market. This makes the sales of these products second only to digital baseband’s 28% of the $65 billion (non-memory) cellphone chip market. The report’s sensor category includes touch controllers, camera image sensors and several microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) sensors including accelerometers and gyroscopes. With MEMS and sensor component sales portion growing by 36% to $5 billion in 2013, the report forecasts 20% growth to $6 billion in 2014. The report identifies biometric image sensor recognition as the highest growth area , which grew 221% to 45 million units in 2013 and will grow to 145 million in 2014.
