Autonomous vehicles have drawn a lot of attention recently. However, subtle controls that keep the driver’s eyes on the road or detect when the driver is not sufficiently alert are appearing to add incremental control to vehicle’s and increase safety.
Based on a gaze detection camera, automotive supplier Valeo has demonstrated an infotainment system controlled by eye movement. Combined with the company’s heads-up display (HUD) technology projecting dashboard controls onto the windshield, the gaze detection sensor allows motorists to activate a control without taking their eyes off the road.
With the eye tracking camera, a vehicle system could also monitor the driver’s attentiveness, eye and eyelid movements, detect fatigue and intervene to alert the driver or automatically take control of the car, if necessary, in the event of an emergency.
