So how do you make a smart wireless brake light for bicycles? As with many “smart” products, you start with a smart sensor of some sort. In the case of LucidBrake from LucidLights, LLC, it is a 3-axis motion sensing accelerometer. Alerting the system’s control to indicate the bike’s status to cars, other bikers, and pedestrians using 8 LEDs, the control provides the difference between slowing down and abruptly stopping with 4 beacon modes (flashing, fast flashing, solid, off) and 2 braking indicators (sudden and normal). The 3-axis accelerometer filters out road bumps, grades, angles, and normal cycling movements to avoid false indications.
