Similar to many high-end models, the Tesla Model X uses camera, radar and sonar sensors to provide the driver with real-time feedback to help avoid collisions. The vehicle also has parking sensors and blind spot warning. This is not uncommon in high-end and even medium-priced vehicles. What’s unique is the sensing in the doors.
Even though the Tesla Model X’s Falcon Wing doors can open in incredibly tight parking spaces, they still employ sensors to detect if sufficient space exists. For example, the Model X can automatically sense the clearance height in a garage using ultrasonic sensors in the roof. Computations allow a different approach to opening the doors. For this application, Tesla engineers developed a new ultrasonic sensor that can perform sonar sensing through metal.
