Human machine interfaces in wearable devices, remote controls, gaming devices, track pads and more frequently use projected-capacitive technology for touch sensing. In addition to glass front sensor construction for optics and light touch, projected capacitive technology has multi-touch capability that enables gestures and uses printed circuit board (PCB) sensor design to provide a cost-efficient touch interface. In these battery powered devices, reduced power consumption is an ongoing design goal.
Microchip Technology’s MTCH6102 uses configurable sleep/idle frame rates to optimize operation for most power budgets with active mode as low as 12 µA. The projected-capacitive controller facilitates design integration of capacitive scanning for touchscreens and touchpads including 11 single-finger gestures to swipe, scroll or double tap. The MTCH6102 enables flexible, scalable solutions to support PCB, ITO or FPC sensors up to 15 channels. It supports cover lens thicknesses up to 3 mm plastic and 5 mm glass.
Microchip’s Low-Power Projected-Capacitive Touch Pad Development Kit supports the evaluation and design in of the MTCH6102.
