Ceramic caps from Balluff provide sensor protection and extend life

August 6, 2018 By Mary Gannon

Balluff’s newest ceramic caps extend sensor life and minimize downtime by providing a layer of needed protection to the face of sensors in harsh conditions. The caps, which can be added easily before or after installation, protect flush mount sensors from high temperatures, weld spatter, abrasives, and impact.

Balluff Ceramic Caps for sensor protectionOften made of aluminum and magnesium/aluminum alloys, which decreases weight but also reduces sensing capabilities, sensors are being placed in tight proximity to the parts being monitored — and right in harm’s way. The face of the sensor is the most vulnerable area and when the face gets damaged, the sensor will start to misread or stop working entirely. The addition of a ceramic cap can help prevent this damage and, therefore, extend the life of the sensor and minimize downtime.

“These caps look simple but can go a long way in increasing machine uptime and productivity while reducing MRO consumption and, overall, improving that uptime picture in manufacturing,” said Dave Bird, Balluff sales champion. “Flush mount sensors can take a beating and start to degrade, but the addition of a rugged ceramic cap can save a lot of heartburn on the manufacturing floor. It is an easy solution to a difficult problem.”

The ceramic caps:

  • Increase sensor life
  • Withstand high temperatures, weld spatter and abrasives
  • Are ideal for welding applications
  • Install easily with M8, M12, M18, and M30 sizes available

The ceramic caps provide end protection for flush-mount and cylindrical-style inductive proximity sensors. The caps can simply be threaded in place to protect the most vulnerable area of a cylindrical bodied sensor — where the face meets the barrel. The caps are compatible with any brand of sensor.
