Pressure sensors, one of the pioneering microelectromechanical system (MEMS) technologies, sell in high volume but play second fiddle to newer three-dimensional MEMS sensing technologies such as accelerometers and gyroscopes. A new report from Yole Développement, MEMS Pressure Sensor, says that MEMS pressure sensors are experiencing renewed growth thanks to consumer electronics applications and are expected to have a cumulative annual growth rate (CAGR) of 22% from 2012 to 2018. With predicted sales of 2.8 billion units, consumer pressure sensors will represent 1.7 billion units and exceed automotive as a market driver but will have a much lower average selling price (ASP).
