Monitoring a product’s or container’s temperature through the supply chain to ensure that a critical temperature has been maintained or avoided is an existing sensing application that can increase with the right product. Blue Spark Technologies and IDS Microchip have developed a design solution: a battery-assisted passive (BAP) RFID tag reference design. The design uses Blue Spark Technologies’ printed batteries and IDS Microchip’s SL900A RFID chips to enable real-time time-and-temperature monitoring and data logging of consumables. The printed battery is a1.5V/cell carbon-zinc MnO2 chemistry in a co-planar architecture for easy integration that operates from -30 to +50° C. The RFID tag operates over a frequency range 860 to 960 MHz and temperature range of -40°C to +125°C.
