Electrical and electronics play a key role in the capability of many sensors including encoders. However, mechanical problems can undo all the good of the electronics if something goes wrong that can’t be detected. For its RCN absolute encoders, HEIDENHAIN Corporation integrated a Fault Exclusion for Loosening of the Mechanical Connection.
Available in both a standard and now Functionally-Safe Certified versions, the RCN encoders (2xxx, 5xxx and 8xxx models) are part of the company’s integral bearing products. When used within proper speed parameters, temperatures, and angular accelerations and with the addition of a catch ring or spring pins (depending on the coupling method), the RCN encoders achieve a positive mechanical connection which helps eliminate the possibility of the encoder loosening and producing false data.
