Automotive applications are well known for their stringent quality requirements. At the same time, MEMS gyroscopes have been touted as solutions to and suitable for automotive application requirements for many. So I was quite surprised to read that STMicroelectronics was the first supplier to qualify its A3G4250D Automotive 3-Axis MEMS Gyroscope to meet the automotive AEC-Q100 qualification. AEC-Q100 is the industry-standard qualification for automotive integrated circuits.
The 3-axis gyroscope for automotive applications measures angular rates up to ±245 dps and is assembled in a 4.0 x 4.0 x 1.1mm package. In addition, the unit embeds an 8-bit temperature sensor and operates within an extended temperature range from -40 to 85°C. The Yole Développement report provides further details of this 3-Axis MEMS gyroscope
