Controlling permanent magnet generators with large shafts in applications like wind turbines can pose a significant challenge since the shafts can be a meter in diameter. The Leine & Linde answer to the problem is to segment a ring encoder for the velocity sensing into pieces. This simplifies both commissioning and service, since the ring is often mounted on a shaft between other parts in the machinery, making it difficult to access. The segmented ring allows mounting the pieces from two sides of the shaft and then screwing them together completes the assembly. The segments are also easier to handle when transporting and storing the ring.
