Just when you thought that you’ve heard just about every smart prefixed term possible, a new one appears. This time it is based on research reported by engineers at Microsoft Research, University of Rochester and University of Southampton about what is being called a smart bra. Instrumented with an electrocardiogram (EKG) sensor to capture heart rate and respiration, an electrodermal activity (EDA) sensor to read skin conductance and a 3-axis accelerometer and a 2-axis gyroscope to indicate movement, the bra provides critical data to alert the user of a stressful situation that could trigger binge eating. An app in a smart phone provides the user with helpful information to discourage stress-induced eating.
