Wireless transmitters mounted in remote locations can provide valuable information on a variety of topics – until their battery power decreases below a critical threshold. Energy harvesting companies like Perpetuum can extend the useful life of these applications when the right conditions are present. With its Rosemount 3051S Wireless Pressure Transmitter, Emerson Process Management has identified these conditions and decreased transmitter maintenance by extending the life of the power module. For this application, they chose Perpetuum’s Vibration Energy Harvester and Intelligent Power Module solutions.
The electromagnetic-energy harvester converts mechanical energy (vibration) to electrical energy through an oscillating mass (magnet). The mass passes across a coil creating a varying amount of magnetic flux, inducing a voltage according to Faraday’s law.
The power module life is specified under installed conditions for predictable life expectancy of up to 10 years.
