Smart Fabric Sensors Make Physical Measurements

December 10, 2014 By Randy Frank Leave a Comment

Existing wearable sensors measure physiology (EKG, EMG), electrical conductivity or breathing. In contrast, patented, proprietary monolithic fabric sensor technology from Bebop Sensors Inc.BeBop%20Sensor%20Foot%20Pressure allows physical measurements including bend, location, motion, rotation, angle, size, pressure, force and torque. The sensors’ continuous real-time reporting and 3D mapping capability can enable applications such as:

  • answering calls from a shirt
  • predicting diabetic events
  • measuring gait through insoles, show hand/foot location on gym mats and
  • tracking driver alertness in steering wheels

While recently offered as a fabric-based technology, the sensing approach has evolved from diligently tuned fabrics, geometries, and production processes that have been used in over 1 million sensors produced by musical instrument company, Keith McMillen Instruments.
