How can Wi-Fi sense without sensors?

July 28, 2021 By Randy Frank

With over 105 patents filed and pending and 45+ patents granted worldwide, Origin Wireless Inc.’s Hex Home security system uses patented Wireless AI™ technology to provide WiFi Sensing™. The Hex system consists of a home master command, remote devices and an app. Devices are located about 15 to 30 feet from each other.

Installation requires only a simple 3-step process: download the app, plug in Hex devices and connect to Wi-Fi. The Hex devices fill a room with Wi-Fi signals. As the waves bounce off and bend around structures (including walls and ceilings), people and pets, the system detects motion — if that’s what the user wants. The artificial intelligence (AI) based system has built in filters that allow the homeowner to filter out unwanted signals/warnings by adjusting the sensitivity levels. For example, pets or an automated vacuum or motion from a fan blowing a curtain can be allowed without causing false alarms.

Three security modes provide different functions for users. In the away mode, the home is locked down. A siren in the remote plug-in can scare off intruders. The vigilant mode keeps an eye on things. The home mode is the normal mode for safety monitoring. But even in this mode, the Hex plug-in doubles as a night light to provide added lighting for safety.

With a scheduling feature, the user can automatically switch modes. Other programmable features for user flexibility include selectable exit and entry delays to give the users more time to enter or leave their home without setting the alarm off.

Analyzing and interpreting the Wi-Fi signals allows the Hex system to operate without additional motions sensors or cameras. Hex’s Motion AI Engine senses the distortion in the Wi-Fi signals to localize where the motion occurred. The indoor tracking technology provides centimeter accuracy. Wireless non-line-of-sight (NLOS) sensing produces significantly fewer to no blind spots and covers more areas with less hardware.
