At Sensors Expo 2019, Neil Cersell, President of the Cersell Company Inc., explains his company’s magnetic sensors that are available beyond the magnetic actuation market (Pt 1). With the three-wire, solid-state sensor, Cersell solves a rather simple but costly problem. In the North American market, a PNP type is prevalent and in the European market, the NPN design is common. This would normally require two different products to satisfy both markets and require increased inventory. The Cersell sensor can do both depending on how it is wired. As the magnet approaches the sensor with one setting, it provides a PNP output. When the wiring is changed, the same sensor provides an NPN output, so a single sensor can address both markets with a single part number.
Cersell has sensors that will attach to cylinders that will be used in IP-69 applications that can be washed down and they 2-wire solid-state as well as 3-wire solid-state sensor.
The race track demonstration shows a combination of a magnetic cylinder and a proximity sensor. As a car moves along the track and passes the proximity sensor, the presence of the metal in it trips the sensor and actuates music. The parent power indicator, a green LED, indicates the sensor is active and ready and when it trips it changes to red. The sensor can detect distances as small as 1 mm up to 15 mm away. In the 3-wire technology with both PNP and NPN in the single sensor in magnetic series is also available in the proximity sensor line.
