What’s new in thin-film batteries?

At Sensors Expo 2018 in San Jose, CA, Jeff Sather, the vice president of Customer Solutions at Cymbet Corporation, explained the various formats for the company’s EnerChip thin-film, solid-state batteries. The wafer fabricated batteries have 5 µAH and 50 µAH ratings. The 5 µAH CBC005-BDC is a rechargeable 1.75mm x 2.15mm x 200 microns thick solid-state battery in bare die form. The 50 µAH CBC050-BDC is a rechargeable 5.7mm x 6.1mm x 200 microns thick solid-state battery bare die.

Designed for co-packaging, the solder reflow tolerant chips can be wire bonded like other integrated circuit devices to achieve highly integrated system in package (SiP) designs. With high cycle life (1000 recharge cycles), they are intended to last the life of the product that they are used in (lifecycle capacity= 2.5 mAh for the CBC005-BDC and 25 mAh for the CBC050-BDC). Applications include wireless sensors, energy harvesting, backup power for real-time clocks and memory back-up.

The newly introduced CBC921 power management real-time clock (PMRTC) IC provides several features for low power systems including power fail to detect and battery management. It can support the change over from main power to backup power and supports EnerChips with 4.1V charging as well as coin cells with a 3.2-V option.

To facilitate energy harvesting (EH) designs, Cymbet offers a locating evaluation kit. The EH kit includes a solar cell and solid-state energy storage with power management circuitry required to connect to the solar cell.
